The world turned digital. Picture taking has never been any easier or cheaper.

Photography, at its inception, was expensive and time consuming. Many families opted to have only a few portraits taken over a lifetime.

Many of those prints still exist today in ancient family albums, passed down and cherished by each subsequent generation. With the digital revolution, we have been able to capture every moment, quickly and at relatively low cost. Whereas in previous generations we were required to use

           THE STORY IS YOUR STORY

Humans are storytellers. They share stories of family, friends, good times and bad, history, mystery, and that time grandpa’s comb over just wouldn’t stay down in the wind. Pictures play a part in that story. Photos are a key to memory.

In 50 years, millions of Digital Train Wreck stories will no longer exist. They won’t exist because they were left on phones and hard drives, on a long forgotten internet cloud or a dead social media platform. DO NOT GET COMPLACENT! One catastrophic crash and a lifetime of photos can get erased.

You are the one who tells the story of the events around you, big and small. Don't live in false fail safes like hard drives, clouds, phones, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Does anyone remember the 8 track cassette? How about CDs and DVDs?

CDs and DVDs used to be the data storage backup of choice, and now many computers are not even sold with DVD or CD drives. How many of you have photos from just 5 years ago that are no longer easily accessible because of the quick pace of changing technology?

In many corporate environments, the opportunity to convey the company's story through photography often goes unrealized on the walls. While employees may personalize their workspaces with meaningful photos, the overall office decor, including reception areas, often lacks narrative and cohesion.

At our Atlantic Photo Supply, we specialize in addressing this gap. We offer consultation, production, and installation services tailored to showcase your company's unique narrative. Our aim is to enhance your corporate office decor by translating your story into visual elements. We can manage tasks such as scanning and restoring historical photos for display on canvas or custom framed prints, thereby alleviating the burden on your team.

If you have old pictures we can scan and restore and enhance them. See your story on framed fine art print, or gallery wrapped canvas, Art Decal or maybe metallic.

We love featuring the latest and greatest of our customers’ photography—especially when they share with us the story behind their captures. Rob DeBay, a wildlife photographer, recently headed up to moose country and gives us this stunning capture. Thanks, Rob!

Cape Breton Highlands National Park is a stunning place. In my 47 years, I’ve driven the winding Cabot Trail probably 20 times and it never disappoints. The views are nothing short of amazing and it’s always a pleasure to return. Angela and I try to visit the park every year to take in the fall colours and this year was no exception.

Since I took up serious wildlife photography 5 or 6 years ago, it has been my goal to capture a Cape Breton bull moose. There’s a healthy population of moose in the park but this photograph has always eluded me. Despite their massive size and outgoing nature during their mating season in the fall, the opportunity has never presented itself. We have hiked the Skyline Trail (the best trail for seeing moose) and others multiple times over the years in an effort to lay eyes on one of these majestic creatures but it simply hasn’t happened for us.

Imagine our surprise this year when we rounded the corner in Ingonish on October 4th to find a giant bull out in the salt marsh! Angela yelled, “MOOSE!” I thought she was pulling my leg but there it was!

I couldn’t get over the massive size of it as it stood in the wide open staring at our car. I was in awe. I quickly grabbed my gear from the back, adjusted my manual settings, quietly got out and started snapping away. I got a few great shots but they couldn’t compare to what I was going to capture next.

The bull, undisturbed by my presence, made its way to the freshwater stream at the head of the marsh. To my amazement, it started taking a bath! Knowing that a giant shake of water was imminent, I quickly bumped up my shutter to capture the flying water, steadied myself on a branch and waited with anticipation.

If you’ve ever had a tour of this place, you’d know that it’s not just the storefront where all the action takes place. In fact, there’s a whole other level of important work being done in the work areas behind the photo lab.

It’s pretty much always busy back there in Mount & Lam... canvas prints in various stages spread over the tables, prints big and small waiting for their respective finishes, trimming and packaging. Mostly it’s the same clients sending their work through, already sure of what they want. The odd consumer order makes it there every now and then. To be honest, it’s surprising there’s not more! Of course, most people don’t realize it’s an option—a great one at that.

We have two options available that add strength and protection to your prints—Smooth Mount and Foamcore.

Smooth Mount is our customer favourite and most popular option. It’s strong, but thin enough (1/16") to fit in ready-made frames and as the name suggests, it’s also super smooth!

Foamcore is the second option. It’s lightweight but thicker than Smooth Mount, and so better for custom framing.

            lamination

. When Lamination is added to your print, your print can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, while a straight print on photographic paper can not.

If your print isn’t going behind glass, you’re going to want the extra protection against greasy fingerprints and dust/dirt.

If framing the print is in your future, and you won’t be using a matte, you’re going to want lamination to insure that the print won’t stick to the glass. This will eliminate a hassle down the road, when you need to swap out or replace your photo/frame.

If you are using a matte, and your print won’t be up against the glass, then lamination isn’t a necessary step—though it’s still an option.

We offer two different types of Lamination:

           Pearl and Leather.

Pearl Laminate adds a delicate sheen to your images and is best for photos that will be viewed under direct lighting.

Leather Laminate, which is our most popular choice for the majority of our clients, has the texture its name suggests. However it will not fade or change the colors of your image in any way, nor the sharpness.

So the next time you put your time and money into choosing and printing

           a large print

, consider it an investment you need to protect. It’s really only a small cost for the piece of mind knowing that, years later, your print will still be good as new!

The Heron Tourist

I’m a member of NSBS on Facebook and reports were pouring in of a very rare Tricolored heron being spotted in Sambro. They are typically residents of the southern states. It was likely blown here by one of the March storms. I’d never seen one so off I went with my Canon to Sambro. Upon arriving, Laurie Ann and a few other birders were there taking in the rare sight but at a distance too far to capture with any amount of acceptable photo quality. I packed it in after a brief stay. I didn’t even take my camera out of the bag.

Round two occurred two days later; a misty afternoon with dull light. During my first attempt, I’d noticed a spot near a calm pool of water where, if the stars aligned, I’d get some good shots where the muted background (grey appearance to the water) would make the awesome colours of the bird ‘pop’. I settled in, crouched behind a granite boulder under a spruce tree, and 20 minutes went by without the bird appearing.

As luck would have it, my patience paid off and without warning, the heron appeared out of the mist and landed 20 feet in front of me! It was surreal; just me, my camera and this beautiful bird posing for me! It fed, preened and rested for 40 minutes and was never more than 50 feet away from me. It knew I was there but remained extremely calm and cooperative. I couldn’t believe what was happening in front of me. I took hundreds of ‘keepers’ with my Canon 70D and EF 100-400 L Mk II and I’m VERY pleased with my images! They are proving to be quite popular. It was an experience I’ll never forget and provided me with some shots of a lifetime!
